The code names for the different code bases are assigned by the development team to different branches in the code repository. They provide a convenient way for developers to refer to different stages in the development process. Version numbers and package names cannot be used for this since they are decided on long after the development process has started. While these names are intended for Sun internal use they invariably leak out so it is helpful to list them here.
Anyone who expects that the next package release will always include the latest code from development should note that both JES 3 and JES 4 were based on Guajillo despite the fact that Poblano was being actively worked on at the time of the JES 4 release. Similarly, anyone who expects the next code base to correspond to a new major or minor version should note that Poblano became JES MS 6.3 but Tepin only bumped things to JES MS 6.3P1.
